NG-powered generator sets supply 3MW of power for one of Hamburg's most sustainable projects

The need for increasingly sustainable heat generation has led the city of Hamburg to embark on a key project: the construction of a 1.16 kilometre tunnel under the River Elba to connect the north of the city to a new urban heating grid.

The machines used to bore this important pipeline are powered by 3 1 MW gensets from the HES rental fleet. Equipped with the latest technology, these natural gas generators provide an affordable and sustainable solution.

The aim of this ambitious initiative is to decommission power plants and replace them with a decentralised and efficient grid.

PERSONALISED APPROACH TO CUSTOMER SERVICE

HES' personalised approach to customer service was key to its being chosen for this project. This approach, which avoids the need for substantial upfront payments, is crucial to reducing the financial burden of a project and to facilitating its implementation. Another important factor was the company's expertise in temporary power initiatives requiring more than 1 MW, a sure guarantee that it has the capacity to manage large-scale infrastructure projects. The result of all of this, combined with the experience and resources of a global player in power solutions, is an optimised power supply.

 UNITS INSTALLED

The project consists of 3 HGS-1000 T5 NG/LPG /1 MW gas generator sets: Mobile, compact and low OPEX).

  • A G-56SM engine, designed to run on both natural gas and LPG.
  • A PI734C alternator.
  • A DEIF AGC-4 MKII control unit, designed to meet German grid connection regulations, if required.
  • A container with a built-in silencer.

These 3 gensets work in parallel to power the tunnel boring machine which is located in the Port of Hamburg. The tunnel is expected to take 2 to 3 years to complete.

The units are isolated from the grid (island mode operation) and will be connected to a voltage transformer in order to regulate the operating voltage of the installation. In addition, a 200 kVA gas genset has been installed to supply the installation during off-peak periods.

ADVANCED AND EFFICIENT MACHINERY

With its G-56SM engine and PI734C alternator, HES' state-of-the-art, hi-tech generator sets provide the best possible performance. In addition, the DEIF AGC-4 MKII control unit ensures compliance with German grid connection regulations. The container with its built-in silencer, the gas train with its safety and pressure regulation system, and the gas detectors all ensure safe and efficient operation.

POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

The choice of HES as a strategic partner not only ensures compliance with environmental regulations, but also makes a positive contribution to the local community. The construction of the tunnel under the River Elbe will provide much-needed infrastructure and help stimulate vital development in the region and HES' experience in temporary power projects will ensure that the project is completed efficiently and on time.

In conclusion, HES is not only putting its expertise at the service of the community and the environment, but it is also demonstrating its ability to reduce the financial burden and become a strategic partner in the delivery of crucial power infrastructure projects, backed by state-of-the-art machinery.
