The 18 MW continuous power solution deployed in the West Midlands in the United Kingdom demonstrates our ability to design and implement power generation systems that not only meet the growing demand for power in densely populated areas, but also the most stringent environmental and efficiency standards. Our ability to supply gas generator sets, state-of-the-art soundproofing and remote management technologies, allows us to provide reliable and sustainable power, adapt to the specific needs of any given region and contribute to sustainable development on a global scale.
In the UK's West Midlands, we have implemented an innovative power solution that has transformed the region's electricity landscape. The initiative, which involved the installation of gas generator sets providing 18 MW of continuous power, has been crucial in meeting the growing demand for power in this densely populated region.
Project summary:
- Location: West Midlands (United Kingdom)
- Installed power: 9 x 1,930 kW | 18 MW (COP)
- Generator sets: 9 HGM-2370 T5 NG units in containers
- Special configuration: Gas generator sets connected in parallel to the public grid, running at constant load 2,500 hours per year.
- Distributor: Ocktcom Limited
The West Midlands region of the UK is a major centre for business, healthcare and finance. Due to its rapid development, the demand for power in this region of around three million people has increased significantly in recent years. The ideal solution to this challenge was to deploy power plants to back up the public grid, using more sustainable fuels to reduce emissions of carbon, NOx, CO2 and particulate matter into the air.
Objective
The main objective was to ensure a continuous power supply to the public grid to cover both the increase in the demand for electricity and any possible fluctuations in the generation of power from renewable sources. The gas generator sets, designed for rapid activation, were required to supply 100% of the installed power in a matter of minutes. Located in the vicinity of a residential area, the plant required state-of-the-art soundproofing technology to reduce the acoustic impact to a minimum.
Solution
The solution was to install a power plant consisting of nine gas generator sets connected in parallel to the grid. Housed in super-soundproofed containers, these gensets guarantee a continuous power supply of 18 MW 2,500 hours per year. The environmental and acoustic emission levels are well within the legal limits set by the MCPD, thereby ensuring compliance with the most stringent standards.
Why has HES been chosen for this project?
-
Technical features:
- Soundproofed containers: Their double silencer exhaust systems keep noise levels to 65 dBA at 1 metre.
- Natural gas engines: Each engine delivers 1,930 kW with low particulate, CO2, SOx and NOx emissions (250 mg / Nm3 at 100% load).
- Integrated PLC: Ensures a reliable and efficient parallel connection to the grid and effective remote management.
- Cooling system: Controlled by a frequency converter that reduces fuel consumption to maximise power efficiency.
- Safety: Equipped with smoke and gas sensors and emergency ATEX-certified ventilation in the container.
Project benefits:
- Immediate response: Gensets connected in parallel to the grid, capable of supplying 100% load in a matter of minutes.
- Environmentally friendly: Gas generator sets that reduce carbon and NOx emissions.
- Low acoustic impact: Special soundproofing.
- High efficiency: Cooling system controlled by a frequency converter.
- Smart management: Remotely controlled generator sets.
This successful implementation prioritises sustainable and reliable technology, using high power, gas generator sets to ensure stable and efficient power generation. Not only has the adopted solution met the power needs of the West Midlands, but it has also made a significant contribution to the region's sustainable development.
